With the Vancouver Writers Festival included in this week’s event round-up, it’s a jam-packed week of events. Other authors continue their book tours, and reading series gets rejuvenated.

The 2017 Vancouver Writers Festival kicks off this week with a busy and exciting schedule of events. We highlighted some of our top picks for you. With nearly 100 events, there is something for everyone.

Aaron Williams, an experienced firefighter, continues the launch tour for his memoir, Chasing Smoke. Hear an insider-account of how a fire season unfolds on in Prince George on Monday, October 16, Williams Lake on Tuesday, October 17, and Victoria on Friday, October 20.

Chris Czajkowski continues her province-wide tour celebrating her new book, Harry: A Wilderness Dog Saga (Harbour Publishing). On Wednesday, October 18, author Sage Birchwater will present a slideshow at the Vancouver Island Regional Library branch in Sidney. The talk will cover his latest book, Chilcotin Chronicles: Stories of adventure and intrigue from British Columbia’s Central Interior (Caitlin Press).

If poetry is more your thing, Thursday, October 19 is the Vancouver launch of Refugium: Poems for the Pacific, an anthology of poems that explore poets’ deep concern for the Pacific Ocean and the creatures within, edited by Victoria’s Poet Laureate, Yvonne Blomer.

The 25th annual Surrey International Writers Conference runs from Thursday, October 19 to Sunday, October 22. This widely-lauded event features workshops, master classes, world-renowned authors, and much more. (P.S. Diana Gabaldon apparently loves SiWC and attends every year.) The exhibitor hall and some author signings are free to attend, while most workshops and readings are paid events.

The co-authors of It Can Be Done: An Ordinary Man’s Extraordinary Success, Chick Stewart and Michele Carter, will be signing books on Saturday, October 21 in Langley. It Can Be Done is the autobiography of Stewart, a self-made man, owner of S&R Mills, the most successful custom cutting sawmill business in BC.

Acclaimed author and CBC broadcaster Grant Lawrence is holding a special evening of stories and songs on Saturday, October 21 on Bowen Island. The ticketed event will feature Lawrence reading stories from all three of his books and multiple musical guests.

Poetic Justice recently announced that they were leaving their home in New Westminster for new digs at the Vancouver Public Library. The event will move to every second month, alternating with the Dead Poets Reading Series. Poetic Justice‘s inaugural reading at their brand new venue will be on Sunday, October 22, with 5 poets celebrating their 70th rotation around the sun, including Kate Braid, Heidi Greco, and Susan McCaslin.
