On Mockingbird Hill by Mary Kelly | Salmon Arm
December 9 | 2:00 PM - 3:30 PMFree
Among lighthouse keepers, tree planters, and other jobs in the isolation of nature, we don’t often hear about the life of fire lookouts. From the foothills of Calgary all the way to Shuswap Lake, this memoir is a favourite among locals.
On Mockingbird Hill: Memories of Dharma Bums, Madcaps, and Fire Lookouts by Mary Theresa Kelly is an account of the idealized fire lookout lifestyle made popular by Jack Karouac. It is also the story of a woman’s search for meaningful work. Kelly’s reflections look humorously on gender, and how sometimes, our lives mysteriously and briefly intersect with others, leaving an imprint and forcing us to look inward.
Join author Mary Kelly as she unravels several formative years of her life among a close-knit group of fire lookouts (people who report smoke sightings while upon mountain tops).
Free admission. Books available for sale & signing by Bookingham Palace.
