November 16 | 6:00 PM - 8:00 PMFree
This reading event is a part of the Read Local 2017 Fall series. Local authors will delve into little-known places, experiences, and events in BC.
Wayne Norton will be reading from Fernie at War: 1914-1919 (Caitlin Press). From “enemy alien” internment camps to WWI disillusionment—these are the five pivotal years that shaped Fernie, BC, a city instrumental to the national identity of Canada.
Judith Plant’s Culture Gap: Towards a New World in the Yalakom Valley (New Star Books) is her memoir of living in a hippie commune near Lillooet in the 1980s.
Shanon Sinn’s new book The Haunting of Vancouver Island: Supernatural Encounters with the Other Side (TouchWood Editions) is a compelling investigation into supernatural events and local lore on Vancouver Island.
Rob Wood will wrap up the night with At Home in Nature: A Life of Unknown Mountains and Deep Wilderness (RMB | Rocky Mountain Books) an intriguing story of one family’s life among the rugged landscapes of British Columbia’s Coast Mountains, converting youthful ideals, raw land, and a passion for the outdoors into a practical off-grid homestead.
The night will be hosted by Mike Calvert. Calvert’s publishing credits include feature articles in Canadian Hot Rods magazine, Synergy magazine, and The Navigator newspaper. His poetry has been published in the 2016 anthology, In Our Own Aboriginal Voice, and in Portal 2012 magazine. Michael won the Pat Bevan Award for fiction writing in 2012 and a Meadowlarks Award for a promising body of fiction work. His fiction piece, “Flood Damage,” placed second In Our Own Aboriginal Voice 2016 writing contest.
Books will be available for purchase.
