SUMMARY:Book Launch - Exhumations: Inside the Body of a Petrostate by Joanne Leow
DESCRIPTION:Join Simon Fraser University English Professor Joanne Leow at Enabling Arts on April 9th (6:30 PM) for the launch of her new book\, “Exhumations: Inside the Body of a Petrostate”. \nAbout the book: \n“What unknowable chemical? How slow was this damage\, this violence? … How might any of us stay uncontaminated by all that was built around us?” \n“Exhumations: In the Body of a Petrostate” oscillates between an unflinching critique of the author’s birth island\, Singapore\, and a memoir of grief and illness. Seeing our porous bodies as part of a contaminated and compromised system based on extraction\, violence\, and political repression\, the book asks what must be made visible in our current moment. Drawing on her experience as a journalist for state-controlled media\, and her current work as a scholar\, Leow explores histories of activism\, censorship\, weapons manufacturing\, terraforming\, and petroleum refining. In doing so\, she traces the networks of power that link Singapore with Canada\, Palestine\, Israel\, England and beyond. Drawing on art\, photography\, film\, and literature\, she considers how they exhume truths that cannot otherwise be told. \nThis launch is supported by Simon Fraser University’s Department of English and the David See-chai Lam Centre\, and Alchemy/Knopf. \nProfessor Leow will be joined by UBC Professors Phanuel Antwi and John Paul (JP) Catungal. She is Associate Professor and Canada Research Chair of Transnational and Decolonial Digital Humanities at Simon Fraser University. She is the author of the academic monograph\, “Counter-Cartographies: Reading Singapore Otherwise” (Liverpool University Press\, 2024) and the poetry collection\, “Seas Move Away” (Turnstone Press\, 2022). Her creative work and research lie at the intersections of the environmental humanities\, transnational and diasporic cultural production\, global Asia studies\, autotheory\, and decoloniality. \nJP Catungal (he/him) is Assistant Professor in the Institute for Gender\, Race\, Sexuality and Social Justice\, and Co-Director of the Centre for Asian Canadian Research and Engagement at the University of British Columbia. A queer\, first generation\, Filipinx Canadian scholar\, JP’s research\, teaching and public facing works are in conversation with critical human geography and feminist and queer of colour theories and methods. He is particularly interested in how migrant\, racialized and LGBTQ+ communities address their experiences of marginalization in the fields of sexual health\, education and social services. He has served as co-edit of the book\, “Filipinos in Canada: Disturbing Invisibility”\, as well as special journal issues for “BC Studies”; “ACME: International Journal of Critical Geographies”; “TOPIA: Canadian Journal of Cultural Studies”; and “Alon: Journal for Filipino American and Diasporic Studies”. He received the Killam Teaching Prize at UBC. \nPhanuel Antwi is an artist\, an organizer\, a curator\, and an associate professor of English concerned with race\, poetics\, movements\, intimacy\, and struggle. He works with text\, dance\, film\, and photography to intervene in artistic\, academic\, and public spaces. Dr. Antwi holds a Canada Research Chair in Black Arts and Epistemologies at the University of British Columbia\, Canada. His recent book\, “On Cuddling: Loved to Death in the Racial Embrace”\, is from Pluto Press. He’s currently finishing a manuscript called “Currencies of Blackness: Faithfulness\, Cheerfulness and Politeness in Settler Writing”.

Now celebrating its 29th year\, this beloved community-engagement project displays the work of ten BC poets on public transit vehicles throughout the province. Join us to hear a selection of the featured 2025-26 poets read from their work\, followed by a short discussion and Q&A in which you can engage with the poets over your love of the written verse! \nREADERS\nHOST Elee Kraljii Gardiner is an author\, editor\, and creative mentor whose award-winning books of poetry include Trauma Head and serpentine loop\, and the anthologies Against Death: 35 Essays on Living and V6A: Writing from Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside\, and three chapbooks: Residence\, WATCHER with Gary Barwin\, and Trauma Head: the medical file. A frequent collaborator with choreographers\, musicians\, and visual artists\, Elee is currently collaborating with nature via a series of durational installations that investigate the law of thermodynamics and cultural ideas regarding the passing of time. Her poetry has won multiple awards\, including the 2022 Vancouver’s City Poem Prize. She has hosted poetry readings and panels for the Federation of BC Writers and Victoria’s Festival of Writers. Susan lives on Nexwlélexm/Bowen Island\, the traditional and unceded territory of the Squamish people. \n  \nJen Currin is the author of seven books\, including Hider/Seeker: Stories\, which was a finalist for a ReLit Award and was named a 2018 Globe and Mail Best Book\, and The Inquisition Yours\, which won the 2011 Audre Lorde Award and was a Lambda finalist. Born and raised in Portland\, Oregon\, on the traditional territories of the Multnomah\, Chinook\, Clackamas\, and other tribes\, Currin lives in New Westminster\, BC\, on unceded Qayqayt\, Kwantlen\, Kwikwetlem\, and Musqueam territories and teaches creative writing and English at Kwantlen Polytechnic University. \n  \nJunie Désil\, born to Haitian immigrant parents in Montréal and raised in Winnipeg\, has devoted over two decades to empowering communities made marginalized. An accomplished poet\, her debut collection\, eat salt | gaze at the ocean (2020)\, was a finalist for the Dorothy Livesay Poetry Prize and explores themes of Black sovereignty and the Haitian diaspora. Currently residing on the Traditional Territories of the Homalco\, Tla’amin\, and Klahoose\, Junie mentors emerging writers at Simon Fraser University’s The Writer’s Studio. Beyond her professional life\, Junie enjoys writing\, coaching\, consulting\, and raising goats. \n  \n  \n  \n  \nJoseph Kidney’s poems have been published in Best Canadian Poetry 2024\, Vallum\, The Malahat Review\, The Fiddlehead\, The Ex-Puritan\, Al-Araby Al-Jadeed (in Arabic translation)\, and more. He has won the Short Grain Contest\, the Young Buck Poetry Prize\, and Arc’s Poem of the Year. Devotional Forensics is his first full-length collection. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nNatalie Lim is a Chinese-Canadian poet living on the unceded\, traditional territories of the Musqueam\, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh Peoples (Vancouver\, BC). She is the winner of the 2018 CBC Poetry Prize and Room magazine’s 2020 Emerging Writer Award\, with work published in Arc Poetry Magazine\, Best Canadian Poetry 2020 and elsewhere. She is the author of a chapbook\, arrhythmia (Rahila’s Ghost Press\, 2022). \n  \n  \nLauren Peat is a poet\, translator\, and teacher based in Vancouver\, BC. Her poems\, essays\, and translations from French have appeared in a wide variety of journals and magazines\, and her many collaborations with composers are featured in the repertoire of acclaimed vocal ensembles across North America. Her debut poetry chapbook\, Future Tense\, was published by Baseline Press in 2024. \n  \n  \n  \n  \nTom Wayman’s prolific literary career includes writing more than twenty poetry collections\, three collections of critical and cultural essays\, three books of short fiction and a novel\, as well as editing six poetry anthologies. He received British Columbia’s 2022 George Woodcock Award for Lifetime Achievement in the literary arts. In 2015\, he was named a Vancouver Literary Landmark\, with a plaque on the city’s Commercial Drive commemorating his championing of people writing for themselves about their daily employment. He won the Western Canada Jewish Book Awards prize for fiction in 2016 (for the short story collection\, The Shadows We Mistake for Love) and for poetry in 2023 (for Watching a Man Break a Dog’s Back: Poems for a Dark Time). His memoir\, The Road to Appledore (or How I Went Back to The Land Without Ever Having Lived There in the First Place)\, was published in 2024. Wayman lives in Winlaw\, BC\, and his website is www.tomwayman.com. \n  \nCalvin Wharton has been published in numerous magazines and anthologies in Canada\, the U.S.\, Wales\, Sweden\, and Denmark. He is a former chair of Creative Writing at Douglas College and writer in residence at the University of Wales. His books include a collection of short fiction\, Three Songs by Hank Williams\, and poetry collections The Song Collides\, The Invention of Birds\, and This Here Paradise.

DESCRIPTION:Hosted by SJ Valiquette\, Liars of Orpheus revolves around writers attempting to lie their way through stories\, poems and lectures.\nEach of the five writers will produce work that are made entirely of lies with the exception of five pieces of truth each. They will win points from sneaking their truths past their opponents or having their lies mistaken for truths. The winner of this month’s competition receives a tiara and points towards our end of the season finally in April. \nFor our debut show\, Death Rides a Unicorn is very proud to present Erin Kirsh\, Sonya Littlejohn\, Holly Flauto\, Spillious the Ridiculous and a mystery storyteller. \nErin Kirsh is an award-winning writer\, performer\, and funnyman from Toronto. Her writing has appeared in publications such as The Malahat Review\, Cosmonauts Avenue\, bBarren Magazine\, Short Edition\, CV2\, ARC Poetry Magazine\, QWERTY\, Poetry is Dead\, EVENT\, PULP Literature\, Geist and more. \nHolly Flauto(she/they) is a poet\, story-teller\, learner and instructor living and writing on the traditional\, ancestral and stolen territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm\, Sḵwxwú7mesh and Selilwitulh Nations. ̱ Their debut poetry-memoir collection exploring immigration to Canada as a modern-day settler\, Permission to Settle\, will be published with Anvil Press in September 2024. Their fiction and creative memoir has previously been published in The Ex- Puritan\, Joyland\, and The Rusty Toque\, and they perform as Stella Palermo on the local story and poetry slam stages. Holly is a Creative Writing and English instructor at Capilano University.\nSonya Littlejohn recently graduated from Simon Fraser University with a certificate in Community Capacity Building. She holds a bachelor of arts from UBC\, a career in poetry performance and facilitation\, and communication building. She is a community engagement facilitator\, a cultural worker\, community coordinator\, mad artist and poet. \nSpillious aka Trevana Spilchen is a Trans feminine settler parent\, musician\, spoken word artist and educator of Ukrainian and Irish decent. They are 2024 recipient of the Zacheus Jackson Memorial award won the 2017 Grand Slam Championship of the Vancouver Poetry slam and finished 6th at the 2018 Canadian Individual Poetry Slam. \nThey have toured as a featured poet all throughout Canada and the US. Spillious has released 3 chapbooks of poetry and the last\, Tales of Trans-formation sold 200 copies. From Sept 2021-23 they shepherded the return of poetry slam in Vancouver as the Slam Coordinator for Vancouver Poetry House and the Tournament Director for the Canadian Individual Poetry Slam Championships. Most importantly\, Spillious is a parent to 4 kids ranging in age from 5 yrs to 23 yrs old and 4 cats named Cola\, Orange Crush\, Dr. Pepper & Rootbeer! \nThere will be a short open mic prior to the competition reserved for liars and faux poets. Each one of the Open Mic pieces also has to adhere to being all lies\, save 5 truths and under 5 minutes in length.

We’ll present Greg Cummings\, author of Gorilla Tactics: How to Save a Species and Sarah Cox\, author of Signs of Life: Fieldnotes From the Frontlines of Extinction in conversation with Bob McDonald\, author of The Future is Now: Solving the Climate Crisis with Today’s Technologies\, and host of CBC Radio’s Quirks and Quarks! \nGorillas are among the most recognizable of the large charismatic mammals\, but climate change and poaching has brought them to the brink of extinction. Greg Cummings was the executive director of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund for seventeen years. He shares his fascinating experiences as a “wildlife Robin Hood”—raising money from the rich and famous and redistributing it to endangered gorillas and their habitats. He met and enlisted the help of celebrities such as Sigourney Weaver\, Arthur C. Clark\, Douglas Adams\, and Leonardo DiCaprio. This thirty-year worldwide journey moves from boardrooms in Manhattan and London to mountain treks in Rwanda and Congo. Gorilla Tactics is sure to enchant readers with Greg’s unique experiences\, while sharing insight into the work it takes to save a species from extinction. \nGREG CUMMINGS has been featured in international publications such as the Guardian\, Ecologist\, and Sea Angler. In 2006 his organization was awarded the BBC Animal Award for best wildlife conservation program. A fundraiser since 1990\, Cummings has raised money in America\, Britain\, France\, Holland\, Italy\, and Canada for causes ranging from wildlife conservation to mental health. As director of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund UK\, he set up dozens of innovative\, grassroots projects in troubled parts of the world—many of which are self-sustaining to this day. His global perspective has given him an eye for where the next crisis might arise\, and how to thwart it. He lives in Victoria\, British Columbia. \n— \nWhat’s to be done when only three spotted owls are left in Canada’s wild? When wolves eat endangered caribou\, cormorants kill rare trees\, and housing developments threaten a tiny frog? Environmental journalist Sarah Cox has witnessed what happens when we drive species to the brink of extinction. In Signs of Life\, she tags along with the Canadian military\, Indigenous guardians\, biologists\, conservationists\, and ordinary people who are racing to save hundreds of species before it’s too late. Travelling across the country\, Cox visits the Toronto Zoo\, home of Canada’s only wildlife biobank\, where scientists conserve living cells from endangered species in the event of future loss; tours Canada’s military bases\, home to some of Canada’s last preserved ecosystems; and travels to Indigenous communities where land stewards are striving to restore the delicate ecological balance that has sustained people for millennia. Book Prize and was a finalist for the Shaughnessy Cohen Prize for Political Writing (Writers’ Trust of Canada) and the George Ryga Award for Social Awareness in Literature. \n— \nBOB McDONALD has been the host of CBC Radio’s Quirks & Quarks since 1992. He is a regular science commentator on CBC’s News Network and a science correspondent for CBC TV’s The National. His book Measuring the Earth with a Stick was shortlisted for the Canadian Science Writers Association Book Award. He has been honoured with the 2001 Michael Smith Award for Science Promotion from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada; the 2002 Sandford Fleming Medal from The Royal Canadian Institute; and the 2005 McNeil Medal for the Public Awareness of Science from the Royal Society of Canada.
