SUMMARY:Love At First Page
DESCRIPTION:Writing a book is a labour of love that often involves working through complex relationships right on the page. Join four Canadian novelists writing at the intersections of romance\, comedy and mental health as they discuss creating lovably flawed characters\, share the process of writing second chance storylines and offer their tried-and-true writing tips to emerging authors. Author meet-and-greet with book signings to follow after the event\, courtesy of bookseller Perfect Match Bookshop. \nFeaturing Natalie Sue\, bestselling author of I Hope This Finds You Well & 2025 Leacock Medal winner; Noreen Nanja\, debut author of breakout hit The Summers Between Us; Leanne Toshiko Simpson\, 2025 Kobo Prize in Romance winner for Never Been Better; and Jacqueline Firkins\, author of 5 novels – including Marlowe Banks\, Redesigned – and UBC professor & costume designer. A selection of Jacqueline’s romance cover dresses will be on display at VPL during this event. \n— \nNatalie Sue is the bestselling and award-winning author of I Hope This Finds You Well. She is a Canadian author of Iranian and British descent. She spent her formative years moving around western Canada with a brief stint in Scotland\, where she discovered her passion for storytelling as a means of connection and reading as a means of comfort. When she’s not writing\, she enjoys bingeing great and terrible TV\, attempting pottery\, and procuring houseplants. She lives in Calgary with her husband\, daughter\, and dog. \nNoreen Nanja is the author of contemporary romance debut The Summers Between Us. As a second-generation Canadian\, Noreen’s writing explores themes of identity\, race and belonging\, wrapped in stories of romantic and familial love. Born and initially raised in small-town British Columbia\, she then spent her formative years in Edmonton before moving to Montreal to pursue her Bachelors in Psychology and English Literature at McGill University and then the University of Calgary to complete her medical degree. She currently lives with her partner and her small dog in Toronto\, where she enjoys working in healthcare\, drinking vast amounts of strawberry matcha and exploring local bookshops. \nLeanne Toshiko Simpson is an award-winning writer\, educator and mental health advocate from Toronto. She writes joyful\, messy\, laugh-out-loud stories about living with mental illness and the moments of hope that help us get out of bed day after day. Leanne’s mental health rom-com Never Been Better won the 2025 Rakuten Kobo Prize for Romance. She teaches creative writing at the University of Toronto and spends her free time designing mental health greeting cards for Pebbles and Company. \nJacqueline Firkins is a writer (Marlowe Banks\, Redesigned)\, costume designer\, and lover of beautiful things. She’s on the full-time faculty in the Department of Theatre & Film at the University of British Columbia where she teaches character design\, world building\, and period costume construction courses. When not obsessing about where to put the buttons or the commas\, she can be found running by the ocean\, eating excessive amounts of gluten\, listening to earnest love songs\, and pretending her dog understands every word she says. \n***Jacqueline’s dresses (#booksasfashion) will be on display during the event and afterwards (until October 20th) through the windows of the Yosef Wosk Poet’s Corner on level 9 where the rooftop garden is. \nIn partnership with Perfect Match Bookshop (Vancouver’s first romance bookstore).

SUMMARY:The Teachings of Mutton: A Coast Salish Woolly Dog
DESCRIPTION:Mutton was a Coast Salish Woolly Dog whose pelt lay forgotten in a Smithsonian drawer for 150 years until it was uncovered by an amateur archivist. According to Indigenous Oral Histories of the Pacific Northwest\, this small dog was bred for thousands of years for its woolly fibres\, which were woven into traditional blankets\, robes and regalia. \nAuthors Liz Hammond-Kaarremaa\, Debra Sparrow and Dr. Kerrie Charnley will read excerpts from THE TEACHINGS OF MUTTON and take part in a discussion. \nThe book brings together narratives of science\, post-contact history\, and the profound effects of colonization\, all grounded in Mutton’s journey—a tale of research\, reawakening\, and resurgence that will interest Pacific Northwest history buffs\, textile and fiber enthusiasts\, and dog lovers. \nClick here for more information!

SUMMARY:More Than Two\, Second Edition: Book Launch and Conversation
DESCRIPTION:Join us and Eve Rickert & Andrea Zanin for the release of More Than Two\, Second Edition. Cultivating nonmonogamous relationships with kindness and integrity\, in conversation with Carrie Jenkins. \nVenue & Accessibility\nThe event will be hosted at the Massy Arts Gallery\, at 23 East Pender Street in Chinatown\, Vancouver.\nRegistration is free\, open to all and required for entrance. The gallery is wheelchair accessible and a gender-neutral washroom is on-site. We ask if you are showing symptoms\, that you stay home. Thank you kindly. \nAbout the Book\nMore Than Two\, Second Edition: Cultivating Nonmonogamous Relationships with Kindness and Integrity. by Eve Rickert and Andrea Zanin\, with a foreword by Dr. Kim TallBear\, author of The Critical Polyamorist. \n“A modern topology of nonmonogamy’s many possibilities—and consequences—fully revised and updated on the tenth anniversary of the bestselling first edition” \n“Can you love more than one person?” A lot of conversations about nonmonogamy start this way. When we discuss “opening”relationships\, contemplate whether we want to beexclusive with our partners\, or introduce multiple partners tofriends and family\, we are asking the people in our lives\, and ourselves\, to contend with this question. The answer is obvious\, and misleading. The love one feels in their heart and the love one expresses through daily acts of care and affection are both “love” in the true sense\, but they have different requirements\, present different options and produce different outcomes. \nMore Than Two can’t promise outcomes\, but it is a guide to the paths—from anchor or nesting partnerships to relationship anarchy—possible within nonmonogamy. This long-awaited second edition bridges emerging theories on attachment and relationship diversity with authors Eve Rickert and Andrea Zanin’s insight and experience. The arcs of nonmonogamous partnerships bend towards complexity\, introspection and compromise—or at least they can\, if we work at it. \nAbout the Authors\nEve Rickert is a Gen X\, queer\, solo polyamorous\, relationship anarchist\, neurodivergent cis woman living on unceded WSÁNEC and Lekwungen territory on the west coast of the place currently known as Canada. She is the curator of the More Than Two Essentials series and the nonmonogamy resource site morethantwo.ca\, the founder and publisher of Thornapple Press\, and the founder and mastermind of the science communications firm Talk Science to Me. \nAndrea Zanin\, MA\, is a white\, nonbinary\, middle-aged queer writer who lives in Tkaronto (Toronto\, Ontario)\, on the traditional territory of the Mississaugas of the Credit\, the Anishnabeg\, the Chippewa\, the Haudenosaunee and the Wendat peoples. Andrea is the author of Post-Nonmonogamy and Beyond\, part of the More Than Two Essentials series\, and has written for the Globe and Mail\, The Tyee\, Bitch\, Ms.\, Xtra\, IN Magazine\, Outlooks Magazine and the Montreal Mirror. Andrea blogs at sexgeek.wordpress.com\, where they created the 10 Rules for Happy Nonmonogamy and coined the term “polynormativity.” \nAbout the Moderator\nCarrie Jenkins: is a professor of philosophy at the University of British Columbia and the author of What Love Is (and What it Could Be)\, Sad Love: Romance and the Search for Meaning\, and Nonmonogamy and Happiness as well as other titles. She holds a PhD in philosophy from Trinity College\, Cambridge\, and an MFA in creative writing from UBC. She has been featured in The Atlantic\, the New York Times\, the Globe and Mail and the Telegraph\, among others.
