SUMMARY:Book Launch: Susan Braley\, Karen Enns\, & Jane Munro
DESCRIPTION:Join Munro’s for an evening of inspiring readings celebrating the newest collections from three wonderful local Victoria poets! \nTilling the Darkness is Susan Braley’s debut poetry collection follows a young woman born into a family of eleven as she navigates the inequities of gender roles on the farm and in the church. Eventually leading us to how this woman\, after leaving the farm\, comes to appreciate the complex\, bountiful legacy of her early life. \nKaren Enn’s Dislocations takes the reader on a lyrical journey\, wrapped in the vicissitudes of seasons and weather—while observing human and other-than-human lives. Enns invites us to peer and is concerned always with the locations and dislocations perspective implies and creates. \nFalse Creek\, Jane Munro’s collection\, balances her signature themes—dream life\, the visual arts\, the mysteries of the natural world—with an urgent\, more directly political voice. While not shirking painful realities\, the poems support the human capacity to climb ladders\, arrive at fresh points of view\, listen to one another\, and greet despair with attention\, wit\, and hope. \nWHEN: Wednesday\, March 8th\, at 7:00PM. Doors open at 6:30PM. \nWHERE: In-store at Munro’s Books! 1108 Government St. \nWHAT: Susan Braley\, Karen Enns and Jane Munro will be reading and talking about their newest poetry collections! \nHOW: This event is free to attend.

SUMMARY:Interview: Eleanor Catton in Conversation with Bill Richardson
DESCRIPTION:Eleanor Catton makes a highly anticipated return to the Vancouver Writers Fest with her first novel since The Luminaries was published a decade ago; the mysterious\, intricately structured tale sold 1.5 million copies worldwide\, and made her the youngest ever winner of the Booker Prize. Now\, Catton plunges readers into the world of a gripping new page-turner. Probe the urgent political issues of our times at this Vancouver Writers Fest Special Event\, featuring a literary thriller that Stephen King has called “as good as it gets.” \nBirnam Wood is a fast-paced\, character-driven\, psychologically penetrating work of climate fiction that explores the tense encounter between Birnam Wood—an internally conflicted guerrilla gardening collective\, whose members plant crops on land they don’t own—and an American billionaire who intends to use his newly purchased plot of New Zealand farmland to build an apocalypse bunker. With a title inspired by Macbeth\, Birnam Wood aims Shakespearean wit and drama at our various contemporary crises. \nCome and discover the book that the Globe and Mail\, The Guardian\, Maclean’s\, Vogue\, Kirkus Reviews and more have named one of the most anticipated of 2023. Catton joins award-winning author and esteemed moderator Bill Richardson on Saturday\, March 11 for an incisive conversation about greed\, power\, and reckoning with our global existential threat. \nBooks will be for sale at the event courtesy of Upstart & Crow.

SUMMARY:Book Launch: The Broken Heart of Winter
DESCRIPTION:📚\nThe Broken Heart of Winter by Judy LeBlanc is available to pre-order from Indigo\, caitlin-press.com\, and your local independent bookstore.\n📚\nIn award-winning writer Judy LeBlanc’s debut novel\, three women are linked by generations of hardship\, displacement\, and the mystery of an eighteenth-century French musket that has been passed down through the LeBlanc family since the time of the Acadian expulsion. A riveting and heart-wrenching look at the effects of cultural trauma on Canada’s Acadian community\, The Broken Heart of Winter takes readers on a riveting ride from modern-day Canada to a 19th-century Maritime island to untangle a family’s web of secrets and lies.\n📚\n“If you are Acadian\, Mi’kmaq\, or a Vietnamese baker working the night shift in Victoria\, BC\, what does survival—physical\, familial\, cultural and financial—look and sound and feel like? This powerful\, beautifully written novel explores the grim historical realities of Acadian expulsion and exile as well as the glorious small and large-scale triumphs of survival in the 1830s and modern-day Canada. SUMMARY:Panel: Speaking the Unspeakable: Black Migration\, Living Transformations
DESCRIPTION:On Wednesday\, April 19th at 7pm\, join Massy Arts Society\, Massy Books and the Beaumont Studios for Speaking the Unspeakable: Black Migration\, Living Transformations\, an evening of conversation in celebration of Suzette Mayr’s new award-winning book The Sleeping Car Porter. \nA thrilling\, visceral novel that explores labour\, desire and memory\, The Sleeping Car Porter highlights an often overlooked part of the past through the perspective of a queer Black man. In conversation with Wayde Compton\, author of The Blue Road\, the two will speak on the topic of unspeakable histories – unspeakable in how racism in the razing of Hogan’s Alley is guised under “urban renewal” and in the ways Black queerness is untold and hidden from our past. This illuminating evening\, moderated by poet and spoken word artist\, Brandon Wint with a musical opening by Khari Wendell McClelland\, invites us to consider invisibility/visibility and to re-examine what has been forgotten. \nThis project has been made possible by the Government of Canada. SUMMARY:Poetry Reading: Derek Beaulieau & Gary Geddes
DESCRIPTION:Two of Canada’s most prominent authors read in Vancouver June 21 \nPoets Corner Reading Series is beyond excited to welcome two of the most prolific and influential names in Canadian literature today: Derek Beaulieu and Gary Geddes. The show starts at 7:30pm PST\, June 21. Fans can attend in person at Fairleigh Dickinson University (842 Cambie Street)\, in Downtown Vancouver\, or online via Zoom. \nBeaulieu has authored twenty-six books of poetry\, conceptual fiction\, critical writing\, as well as over 200 chapbooks and 6 edited volumes. His work is consistently praised as some of the most radical and challenging in contemporary Canadian writing. Best known for his concrete or visual poems\, Beaulieu’s readings are often a fun mix of show and tell. A recent example is his description of a city upside down reflected in puddles. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5-1Ob9NyIUA \nBeaulieu is also a major influence on emerging Canadian poets. Since 2018\, he’s been Director of Literary Arts at the prestigious Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity\, and has been recognized with nine teaching awards locally\, provincially\, and nationally for his contributions to university-level education. He was Calgary’s Poet Laureate from 2014 to 16\, and is currently Banff’s Poet Laureate from 2022 to 2024. \nGary Geddes has written and edited more than fifty books of poetry\, fiction\, drama\, non-fiction\, criticism\, translation and anthologies and been the recipient of a dozen national and international literary awards\, including the Commonwealth Poetry Prize (Americas Region)\, the Lt.-Governor’s Award for Literary Excellence and the Gabriela Mistral Prize from the Government of Chile. His most recent works are Medicine Unbundled\, The Resumption of Play\, The Ventriloquist: Poetic Narratives from the Womb of War\, and The Oysters I Bring to Banquets. He was writer-in-residence at Green College (UBC)\, University of Alberta\, University of Missouri-St. Louis\, and Distinguished Professor of Canadian Culture at Western Washington University in Bellingham. He lives on Thetis Island\, B.C. \nDerek Beaulieu and Gary Geddes are appearing courtesy of Poets Corner Reading Series\, a nonprofit society which has provided a platform for a diverse range of poets since 2010. Run largely by volunteers\, Poets Corner pays poets for reading\, whether in person or on its popular One Minute Poem series on YouTube. Attendees can also register for three-minute time slots at the popular open mic – a draw for both emerging and established poets every month. Attendance is by donation (suggested amount $5)\, with money going to Poets Corner’s Pay the Poets fund.
