Matsui is a registered clinical counsellor in private practice in Vancouver BC\, with an area of focus in queer- and trans-centered sexuality and sexual health. Matsui uses an intersectional lens to work with queer and trans people of colour healing from trauma\, burnout\, and grief. Their work is grounded in anti-oppression\, anti-capitalist and abolitionist values. DESCRIPTION:Hosted by SJ Valiquette\, Liars of Orpheus revolves around writers attempting to lie their way through stories\, poems and lectures.\nEach of the five writers will produce work that are made entirely of lies with the exception of five pieces of truth each. They will win points from sneaking their truths past their opponents or having their lies mistaken for truths. The winner of this month’s competition receives a tiara and points towards our end of the season finally in April. \nFor our debut show\, Death Rides a Unicorn is very proud to present Erin Kirsh\, Sonya Littlejohn\, Holly Flauto\, Spillious the Ridiculous and a mystery storyteller. \nErin Kirsh is an award-winning writer\, performer\, and funnyman from Toronto. Her writing has appeared in publications such as The Malahat Review\, Cosmonauts Avenue\, bBarren Magazine\, Short Edition\, CV2\, ARC Poetry Magazine\, QWERTY\, Poetry is Dead\, EVENT\, PULP Literature\, Geist and more. \nHolly Flauto(she/they) is a poet\, story-teller\, learner and instructor living and writing on the traditional\, ancestral and stolen territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm\, Sḵwxwú7mesh and Selilwitulh Nations. ̱ Their debut poetry-memoir collection exploring immigration to Canada as a modern-day settler\, Permission to Settle\, will be published with Anvil Press in September 2024. Their fiction and creative memoir has previously been published in The Ex- Puritan\, Joyland\, and The Rusty Toque\, and they perform as Stella Palermo on the local story and poetry slam stages. Holly is a Creative Writing and English instructor at Capilano University.\nSonya Littlejohn recently graduated from Simon Fraser University with a certificate in Community Capacity Building. She holds a bachelor of arts from UBC\, a career in poetry performance and facilitation\, and communication building. She is a community engagement facilitator\, a cultural worker\, community coordinator\, mad artist and poet. \nSpillious aka Trevana Spilchen is a Trans feminine settler parent\, musician\, spoken word artist and educator of Ukrainian and Irish decent. They are 2024 recipient of the Zacheus Jackson Memorial award won the 2017 Grand Slam Championship of the Vancouver Poetry slam and finished 6th at the 2018 Canadian Individual Poetry Slam. \nThey have toured as a featured poet all throughout Canada and the US. Spillious has released 3 chapbooks of poetry and the last\, Tales of Trans-formation sold 200 copies. From Sept 2021-23 they shepherded the return of poetry slam in Vancouver as the Slam Coordinator for Vancouver Poetry House and the Tournament Director for the Canadian Individual Poetry Slam Championships. Most importantly\, Spillious is a parent to 4 kids ranging in age from 5 yrs to 23 yrs old and 4 cats named Cola\, Orange Crush\, Dr. Pepper & Rootbeer! \nThere will be a short open mic prior to the competition reserved for liars and faux poets. Each one of the Open Mic pieces also has to adhere to being all lies\, save 5 truths and under 5 minutes in length.

DESCRIPTION:Royal City Literary Arts Society presents “Poetic Justice”\nIn Celebration of National Poetry Month\nSunday\, April 14 from 2-4pm \nFeaturing poets Isabella Wang and Catherine Lewis with host Alan Hill. \nPlus\, additional readings from “A Poetry of Place: Journeys Across New Westminster”\, the poetry postcard anthology project\, curated and edited by Alan Hill\, published in 2021 by the City of New Westminster. \nOpen Mic. \nLocated at the New West Artists exhibit at the\n📍#IHeartNewWest Community Art Space Columbia Square Plaza\, Downtown New West. \n📌UNIT 103\, 78 Tenth Street\, New Westminster. \nCatherine Lewis (she/her) is a Chinese Canadian writer and poet. Her debut poetry chapbook Zipless (845 Press) is a finalist for two Bisexual Book Awards\, including Bi Writer of the Year. Her writing has been longlisted for the CBC Poetry Prize\, nominated for a Pushcart Prize\, and published in The Fiddlehead\, PRISM international\, The Humber Literary Review\, Pulp Literature\, and Plenitude Magazine. A graduate of SFU’s Writer’s Studio\, she is a two-time Banff Centre Literary Arts alumna. Born in Hong Kong and raised in Canada\, she lives in Vancouver on the unceded territories of the Musqueam\, Squamish\, and Tsleil-Waututh peoples. \nIsabella Wang is the author of the chapbook\, On Forgetting a Language\, and her full-length debut\, Pebble Swing\, shortlisted for the Dorothy Livesay Poetry Prize. Among other recognitions\, she has been shortlisted for Arc’s Poem of the Year Contest\, The Malahat Review’s Far Horizons Contest and Long Poem Contest\, and was the youngest writer to be shortlisted twice for The New Quarterly’s Edna Staebler Essay Contest. She is in her Masters of Sociology at SFU. An editor on the Room collective\, she is also a youth mentor with Vancouver Poetry House\, poetry mentor with the UBC Learning Exchange\, web coordinator with poetry in canada\, and directs her own non-profit editing and mentorship program\, 4827 Revise Revision St. \nAlan Hill was born in the UK and immigrated to Canada in 2005. He is the former Poet Laureate of the City of New Westminster\, BC (2017-2020)\, former president of the Royal City Literary Arts Society (RCLAS)\, and was the editor and curator of A Poetry of Place: Journeys Across New Westminster\, published in partnership with New Westminster Arts Services. His writing has been published internationally and his poetry has appeared in Event\, CV2\, Canadian Literature\, The Antigonish Review\, subTerrain\, Poetry is Dead\, among others. He works in the field of community development and immigrant settlement and lives in New Westminster\, BC. His book In the Blood was published by Caitlin Press in 2022.

JD Derbyshire will read from Mercy Gene\, the Man-Made Making of a Madwoman\, a genre-smashing work of auto-fiction about gender confusion\, patriarchy\, addiction\, and mental health; Kathryn Mockler will read from her book of short stories\, Anecdotes\, a book of varied\, immersive works that bristle with truth in the face of unprecedented change; and Emi Sasagawa will read from her debut novel\, Atomweight\, about a “good girl” who becomes herself through fighting—a novel about the need to reconcile competing cultures\, traditions\, and values and explores sexual identity and violence. The evening will begin with an open mic at 7:00 p.m. The open mic will be opened by local writer Justina Elias\, reading “To Do\,” her Constance Rooke Creative Nonfiction Award-winning story\, published in issue #217 of The Malahat Review – and then it’ll open up to YOU! DESCRIPTION:Two of Canada’s most prominent authors read in Vancouver June 21 \nPoets Corner Reading Series is beyond excited to welcome two of the most prolific and influential names in Canadian literature today: Derek Beaulieu and Gary Geddes. The show starts at 7:30pm PST\, June 21. Fans can attend in person at Fairleigh Dickinson University (842 Cambie Street)\, in Downtown Vancouver\, or online via Zoom. \nBeaulieu has authored twenty-six books of poetry\, conceptual fiction\, critical writing\, as well as over 200 chapbooks and 6 edited volumes. His work is consistently praised as some of the most radical and challenging in contemporary Canadian writing. Best known for his concrete or visual poems\, Beaulieu’s readings are often a fun mix of show and tell. A recent example is his description of a city upside down reflected in puddles. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5-1Ob9NyIUA \nBeaulieu is also a major influence on emerging Canadian poets. Since 2018\, he’s been Director of Literary Arts at the prestigious Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity\, and has been recognized with nine teaching awards locally\, provincially\, and nationally for his contributions to university-level education. He was Calgary’s Poet Laureate from 2014 to 16\, and is currently Banff’s Poet Laureate from 2022 to 2024. \nGary Geddes has written and edited more than fifty books of poetry\, fiction\, drama\, non-fiction\, criticism\, translation and anthologies and been the recipient of a dozen national and international literary awards\, including the Commonwealth Poetry Prize (Americas Region)\, the Lt.-Governor’s Award for Literary Excellence and the Gabriela Mistral Prize from the Government of Chile. His most recent works are Medicine Unbundled\, The Resumption of Play\, The Ventriloquist: Poetic Narratives from the Womb of War\, and The Oysters I Bring to Banquets. He was writer-in-residence at Green College (UBC)\, University of Alberta\, University of Missouri-St. Louis\, and Distinguished Professor of Canadian Culture at Western Washington University in Bellingham. He lives on Thetis Island\, B.C. \nDerek Beaulieu and Gary Geddes are appearing courtesy of Poets Corner Reading Series\, a nonprofit society which has provided a platform for a diverse range of poets since 2010. Run largely by volunteers\, Poets Corner pays poets for reading\, whether in person or on its popular One Minute Poem series on YouTube. Attendees can also register for three-minute time slots at the popular open mic – a draw for both emerging and established poets every month. Her latest book is the memoir\, And A Dog Called Fig\, published by HarperCollins. She lives and writes in Kingston\, Ontario. \nAbout the book:\n“Rabbit Foot Bill” by Helen Humphreys\nCanwood\, Saskatchewan\, 1947. Leonard Flint\, a lonely boy in a small farming town befriends the local tramp\, a man known as Rabbit Foot Bill. Bill doesn’t talk much\, but he allows Leonard to accompany him as he sets rabbit snares and to visit his small\, secluded dwelling. Being with Bill is everything to young Leonard–an escape from school\, bullies and a hard father. So his shock is absolute when he witnesses Bill commit a sudden violent act and loses him to prison. Fifteen years on\, as a newly graduated doctor of psychiatry\, Leonard arrives at the Weyburn Mental Hospital\, both excited and intimidated by the massive institution known for its experimental LSD trials. To Leonard’s great surprise\, at the Weyburn he is reunited with Bill and soon becomes fixated on discovering what happened on that fateful day in 1947. He is no stranger to the experience of conflict and human fragility as well as the experience of displacement and resultant isolation — themes in his poetry. Oloruntoba’s debut collection The Junta of Happenstance won the 2021 Governor General’s Award and the prestigious 2022 Griffin Poetry Prize. His latest book\, Each One a Furnace (2022)\, uses the imagery of migratory finches to express restlessness\, immigration\, and the othering that are prevalent globally. In conversation with Wayde Compton\, author of The Blue Road\, the two will speak on the topic of unspeakable histories – unspeakable in how racism in the razing of Hogan’s Alley is guised under “urban renewal” and in the ways Black queerness is untold and hidden from our past. This illuminating evening\, moderated by poet and spoken word artist\, Brandon Wint with a musical opening by Khari Wendell McClelland\, invites us to consider invisibility/visibility and to re-examine what has been forgotten. \nThis project has been made possible by the Government of Canada.
