Did you know that British Columbia is the second largest English-language book publishing region in Canada, with nearly 40 active publishers producing an average of 250 new titles every year? Independent BC publishers operate in several regions, including the Southern Interior, the Sunshine Coast, Vancouver Island, and the Lower Mainland. They bring Canadian writing and culture to a global audience, exporting to more than 40 countries each year.
BC Book Day
Organized by Books BC (Association of Book Publishers of BC) to raise awareness amongst the government and the public of BC’s publishing ecosystem and its cultural and economic contributions, BC Book Day is an invitation to celebrate the province’s book and magazine publishers, authors, illustrators, bookstores, libraries, festivals, and literary prizes that connect us with local stories.
The “Buy Local” campaign is having its moment in our current landscape of economic uncertainties, but we at Read Local BC have always advocated for the cause of buying local, supporting local. It’s kind of our whole deal. And we want you to join us in the festivities!
Support BC Book Day and BC’s independent publishers
- Buy BC-published books directly from your local independent bookstore or the publisher’s website. We’re curated a list of BC publishers and a list of BC independent bookstores to help you buy local.
- Encourage your school and public library to buy and stock both BC and Canadian-published books. You can find hundreds of K-12 books evaluated by educators in our Books for Schools database.
- Celebrate Canadian Independent Bookstore Day on April 25.
Visit our BC Book Day corner to learn more about this Day, and how you can be a part of it.
